The Brobot Adventure Lands at Kitchen Theatre Company - A Note from Emily

ree

After a jam-packed fall, it’s great to be back in full swing at the theater. And what better way to kick things off than with The Brobot Adventure by Darian Dauchan? It’s a sci-fi hip-hop odyssey with live beatboxing, interactive storytelling, and a whole lot of heart. Flobot Owens, a hip-hop android MC, is on a mission to save Planet Nubian from the forces of Wackness. It’s fun, wild, and a celebration of Black artistry, resilience, and the power of joy.

Even solo shows—sometimes especially solo shows—need a full team to bring them to life. Sci-fi theater is all about imagination, and we’ve embraced a lo-fi sci-fi aesthetic—playful, a little campy, and totally theatrical. The set, sound, video, and lights all work together to create a fully realized world. And of course, at the center of it all is Darian, the creator and performer of this one-of-a-kind experience.

If you’ve been around Kitchen Theatre Company, you probably remember Darian from The Whipping Man, The Brothers Size, and Sex with Strangers. But this time, it’s Darian the poet, the hip-hop artist, the dynamic solo performer taking center stage. His past solo works blend spoken word, music, and sharp social commentary into something electric, and this one is no different.

In The Brobot Adventure, you will experience a thrilling call-to-action. Darian uses these elements to create an exciting new parable for this challenging moment in time. What makes this piece so special is how he chooses to address our complex circumstances through humor and whimsy, offering us an opportunity to share in finding solutions.

A sci-fi hip-hop show might not be our usual fare, but it’s got everything we love—bold storytelling, innovative artistry, and important conversations. It’s fast, loud, outrageous, and leaves us asking: What’s my responsibility in building connections and hope? How do we collectively spread dopeness far and wide? These are the questions that stick with us long after the show ends.

So, get ready to move, laugh, and let the beats wash over you. Because The Brobot Adventure isn’t just a play—it’s a party. And you’re invited.
